Ruggiu, Georges

From 6 January 1994 to 14 July 1994, Georges Ruggiu worked as a journalist and broadcaster for Radio Television Libre des Milles Collines (RTLM). As an employee of RTLM, Ruggiu made broadcasts inciting the public to kill and cause seriously bodily and mental harm to the Tutsi population. On 10 December 1998, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) indicted Ruggiu, charging him with two counts of Direct and Public Incitement to Commit Genocide and Crimes against Humanity (Persecution). 

On 15 May 2000, Ruggiu pleaded guilty to the two counts of the indictment. On 1 June 2000, Ruggiu was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment. In February 2008, Ruggiu was transferred to Italy to serve the remainder of his sentence.
