Kamuhanda, Jean de Dieu

From late May 1994 until mid-July 1994, Jean de Dieu Kamuhanda held the office of Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Interim Government in Rwanda. He was also an influential member of MRND (Mouvement républicain national pour la démocratie et le développement) in Kigali-Rural. Jean de Dieu Kamuhanda personally led attacks against Tutsi refugees notably at the parish church and school in Gikomero in the Kigali-Rural prefecture during what many persons have been slaughtered.

On 22 January 2004, the Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) declared Jean de Dieu Kamuhanda guilty of genocide and guilty of extermination, as a crime against humanity. He was nonetheless found not guilty of the other counts. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Kamahunda appealed this decision. On 19 September 2005, the Appeals Chamber of the ICTR confirmed this decision and sentence.
