Karera, François

François KareraFrançois Karera was Prefect of Kigali-Rural Prefecture in Rwanda in the lead up to the genocide and a member of the Mouvement républicain national pour le développement et la démocratie. Between April and May 1994, he encouraged and commanded massacres directed against civilians of Tutsi origin in several localities of his préfecture (Rushashi, Nyamirambo, Kanzenze) and in the church of Ntarama.

Karera was arrested in 2001 and transferred to the authorities of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). On 7 December 2007, the Trial Chamber of the ICTR found François Karera guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity (murder and extermination). He was, however, acquitted of complicity for genocide. François Karera was sentenced to life imprisonment. On 2 February 2009, Karera's life sentence was confirmed by the Appeals Chamber.

On 27 June 2009, Karera was transferred to Benin to serve the remainder of his sentence.
