Stakić, Milomir

Milomir StakicIn September 1991, Milomir Stakić was elected Vice-President of the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS) Municipal Board in Prijedor, located in north-western Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stakić quickly seized power in this municipality, imposed severe restrictions on the non-Serb population and perpetrated attacks against Bosnian Muslims and Croats. Milomir Stakić instigated or otherwise aided and abetted the commission of the crimes committed in the Prijedor Municipality and organised and supported deportations and forced expulsions of more than 20,000 non-Serbs. Many of the Bosnian Muslims and Croats who survived the attacks were arrested and transported to detention centres, administrated by the Crisis Staff of the SDS, where many were then killed.

Milomir Stakić was arrested in Serbia on 23 March 2001 and transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. According to the indictment, he was charged with two counts of genocide, five counts of crimes against humanity, and one count of violations of the laws or customs of war , on the basis of individual criminal responsibility and criminal responsibility for the acts of his subordinates. Stakić was originally indicted with Milan Kovacević and Simo Drljača.

Although Milomir Stakić pleaded not guilty to all counts, he was convicted of four counts of crimes against humanity and one count of violations of the laws or customs of war. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 31 July 2003.

On 22 March 2006 Appeals Chamber confirmed the convictions against Milomir Stakic and rendered its judgment, sentencing him to 40 years’ imprisonment.

On 12 January 2007 Milomir Stakic was transferred to France to serve the remainder of his sentence, credit was given for time spent in detention since 23 March 2001.
