Martić, Milan

Milan Martić is a former political leader of Croatian Serbs. Between 1991 and 1995, Martić held several positions within the Autonomous Region (SAO) Krajina and the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) governments, including Minister of Defence, Minister of the Interior and President of the RSK. On 12 June 2007, Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted Martić on 16 counts of crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war. He was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment.

On 25 June and 26 June 2008, the parties met before the Appeals Chamber for the appeals hearing. On 8 October 2008, the Appeals Chamber affirmed Martić’s 35-year sentence.

On 26 June 2009 Milan Martić was transferred to Estonia to serve the remainder of his sentence.
